Assess the upgrade path for an Informatica PowerExchange (PWX) for z/Operating System (OS) (mainframe) environment from the current installed version to the latest available version, considering the Informatica Platform Availability Matrix (PAM), mainframe OS and source database compatibility, change data capture (CDC) component requirements, and integration with the connected PowerCenter (PC) domain.
Key activities include:
(i) conducting a discovery workshop to collect information about the current PWX z/OS environment, including installed components (PWX listener, PWX logger, environmental change capture routines (ECCR) for DB2, information management system, virtual storage access method, Adabas, or integrated database management system), z/OS version, source database types and versions, job control language (JCL) customizations, authorized program facility authorizations, and integration topology with PC
(ii) reviewing the current configuration against the latest PAM to identify supported upgrade paths, z/OS and source database compatibility requirements, and any end-of-support considerations
(iii) evaluating upgrade approach options (e.g. in-place upgrade versus fresh installation on new Logical Partition) with consideration of mainframe operational constraints, CDC outage windows, and rollback strategy
(iv) assessing CDC continuity considerations, including ECCR re-installation, cold/warm start requirements for the PWX logger, and any changes to capture registrations
(v) reviewing dependencies on the connected PC domain version and identifying any required co-ordination with a parallel PC upgrade
(vi) documenting attention points, known issues, JCL/Parameter Library (PARMLIB) changes, and mainframe-specific prerequisites for the identified upgrade path
(vii) producing a PWX upgrade assessment report covering as-is architecture, target architecture, recommended upgrade path, and attention points
The typical workshop schedule is as follows:
• Discovery Workshop: 1 meeting (2 hours), including key mainframe technical, systems programming, and database administrator stakeholders
• PWX for z/OS is installed and operational (single environment scope)
• Customer to provide a list of its technical subject matter experts (e.g. mainframe database administrator) and ensure their availability to participate in the workshop and assessment activities
• Current PWX version, z/OS version, source database types and versions, and installed ECCR components accessible prior to engagement
• Existing environment documentation (JCL, PARMLIB members, architecture diagrams) shared with Informatica in advance if available
• PC domain version and integration topology identified prior to engagement
• As-is PWX z/OS environment documented, including installed components, ECCRs, z/OS version, source database types and versions, and topology
• Target architecture defined based on the latest supported PWX version per the current PAM, validated against z/OS and source database compatibility
• Supported upgrade path from current PWX version to latest version identified and validated against the PAM
• Upgrade approach options evaluated (in-place vs. fresh installation) with recommended approach and rationale documented for one (1) PWX z/OS environment
• CDC continuity considerations documented, including ECCR impact, logger warm/cold start requirements, and capture registration changes
• PC domain version dependency and upgrade co-ordination requirements identified
• Attention points, risks, JCL/PARMLIB changes, and mainframe-specific prerequisites documented for the recommended upgrade path
• PowerExchange Mainframe Upgrade Assessment Report (including as-is environment documentation, target architecture overview, recommended upgrade path, upgrade approach evaluation, CDC continuity considerations, JCL/PARMLIB change summary, attention points, and identified risks)
