Microsoft Power BI is a business intelligence and analytics tool that enables users to connect to various data sources and create interactive dashboards and reports. Designed to provide powerful data visualizations and business intelligence capabilities, Power BI features an intuitive interface that allows end users to independently generate their own reports and dashboards. It is an integral part of the Microsoft Power Platform.
The Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC) includes a Power BI scanner that enhances the functionality of Power BI by allowing users to extract detailed information about the following components:
- Workspace
- Dashboard
- Tile
- Report
- Data set
This integration facilitates a comprehensive view and management of Power BI assets within the EDC, streamlining data governance and enhancing the ability to leverage business intelligence insights.
- Knowledge of Power BI and Power BI Advanced scanners.
- Divide the input into logical sections and create a configuration for each section. For instance, if you divide the input into 10 sections based on lines of business, make 10 configurations. If a line of business includes different areas like treasury or accounting, create separate configurations for each of those areas as well.
- If you plan to connect Microsoft Power BI to Microsoft Azure through a REST API with the service principal authentication method:

- Enable Preview features for your organization in tenant settings. For more information, see the Knowledge Article: How to enable preview in Microsoft Power BI.
- Enable the service principal. For more information, see the Knowledge Article: How to configure Service Principal for Microsoft Power BI.
- If you plan to connect Microsoft Power BI to Microsoft Azure through a REST API with the administrator user role:
- Assign one of the following Power BI administrator privileges to the administrator user role:
- Microsoft 365 Global Administrator
- Power BI Service Administrator
- Microsoft 365 Global Administrator
- Get administrator access at the workspace level.
- Assign one of the following Power BI administrator privileges to the administrator user role:
- If you use an SSL-enabled proxy or a Power BI instance that have non-standard SSL certificates, import the certificate CA using the following command:
- keytool -importcert -alias proxyPBI /<certificate_location>/<certificate_file_name>.cer -keystore <metadex_jvm_keystore_location> -storepass <metadex_jvm_keystore_password>
- keytool -importcert -alias proxyPBI /<certificate_location>/<certificate_file_name>.cer -keystore <metadex_jvm_keystore_location> -storepass <metadex_jvm_keystore_password>
